The Remote Onboarding Diaries: Episode 2 -Prioritising with Precision
Dive into the second episode of the Remote Onboarding Diaries where we reveal the unique formula for prioritising tasks and create immediate business value from the first sprint.
Hello again, dear remote leader 👋
Our previous episode introduced Andrea's challenge: structuring a remote internship program. If you missed it, here's the link to catch up on the first episode of our Remote Onboarding Diaries.
After analyzing the variety of activities the intern should do across two different projects, each with elements of event management, promotion, and content, we decided to start with the minor complex goals yet offer maximum benefits.
This brings us to the main topic of this episode: How do we prioritize these 'Epics' to create immediate business value right from the first sprint?
The B-U-C Index
Andrea, being an experienced data analyst, came up with a simple yet highly effective formula for this:
√(Benefit² * Urgency²) / Complexity
For each Epic, assign a value from 1 to 10 for its Benefit, Complexity, and Urgency. Then, calculate the score using the formula above.
Andrea proposed to give Complexity less weight than benefit and Urgency; hence he didn't square it.
By prioritizing the Epics with high Benefit, Urgency, and low Complexity, we ensure that we can deliver immediate business value with a manageable workload for the intern.

To help you in your endeavors, we've created a template that automatically applies this formula. Just add your own Epics and values, and get your scoring instantly.
What's next?
Our next episode will explore how we will handle the first sprint planning. As a teaser, I will act as a facilitator, ensuring everyone is on the same page and achieving goals effectively.
Feel free to revisit this past issue if you want a primer on the facilitator's role.
As always, we appreciate your feedback and suggestions.
Don't forget to share your thoughts or any alternative prioritizing methods you use.
Until next time 🚀
That's all for this Saturday.
